Inspired This Christmas. Committed All Year.

This week, 'OakWell Education' had the privilege of attending the Lord's Taverners Christmas Fundraiser — an event that not only captured the warmth and generosity of the season, but also showcased the extraordinary, year-round impact this remarkable charity has on young people across the country. The room was alive with goodwill, shared purpose and genuine community spirit, uniting everyone around one belief: every young person deserves the chance to participate, grow and thrive.

The Lord's Taverners have long championed inclusion, using the power of sport, accessible equipment and community programmes to support young people living with disabilities or facing disadvantage. While Christmas naturally draws attention to charitable causes, the challenges these young people face do not vanish in January. The charity's mission continues every single day, creating meaningful opportunities that strengthen confidence, independence and wellbeing all year round.

The standout moment of the day was the arrival and performance of students from Ysgol Maes Hyfryd, a special educational needs school in Flint. Their arrival in a vibrant, beautifully equipped minibus — generously donated by the Lord's Taverners — was a powerful visual reminder of the charity's impact in action. This vehicle is not just transport; it is freedom, access and opportunity; enabling students to take part in experiences, outings and events that would otherwise be out of reach.

The children's performance filled the room with joy. Their Christmas songs and dances radiated pride, excitement and courage — a wonderful example of what true inclusion looks like. At the heart of Ysgol Maes Hyfryd is their headteacher, Helen Millard, a true force of nature whose passion, energy and unwavering belief in her students shone through. Speaking with her only deepened the understanding of how vital the Lord's Taverners' support is, and how profoundly it benefits the school community.

An enormous amount of credit also goes to Trudy Burrows, Karen Smith, Lynsey Jones and Chris Talbot, the incredible team who organised the entire event with warmth, professionalism and exceptional attention to detail. Their dedication created a welcoming, uplifting atmosphere where the charity's mission could truly be felt and celebrated.

What stood out just as much as the performances and speeches was the sheer generosity in the room. People dug deep, giving with open hearts and a clear desire to make a real difference. It was inspiring to witness such compassion and commitment, knowing that every pound raised helps sustain the Lord's Taverners' essential work long after the festive season ends.

Being part of this event was a genuine honour. It reinforced the importance of supporting charities like the Lord's Taverners not only at Christmas, but throughout the entire year. Their work is continuous, their impact ongoing — and our support must be too.

'OakWell Education' is proud to have been invited to visit Ysgol Maes Hyfryd in the New Year, meeting, once again, the incredible young people who inspired us so deeply at the fundraiser. Being involved with the Lord's Taverners is a privilege, and I look forward to strengthening our relationship and helping amplify the transformative work they do every day.

So here's to working ever more closely and doing ever more for the children who inspire us — opening pathways, nurturing potential and surrounding them with the support that helps them grow, achieve and shine, today, tomorrow and every day of the year.
