A Postcard From Valencia

As I write this, I am sitting in the sunshine in Valencia, taking a rare long weekend away from 'OakWell Education'. The sun is warm, the coffee is strong, and for once my to-do list is not sitting beside me demanding attention.

Like many people who work in education, I am not particularly good at switching off.

There is always one more lesson to plan, one more report to finish, one more email to answer and one more student who needs support. At 'OakWell Education', we often work seven days a week because we genuinely care about the young people and families we support. It is a privilege, but it can also make it difficult to step away.

Valencia has been a timely reminder that sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause.

This city seems to have mastered the art of balancing old and new. One minute you are wandering through streets that tell stories stretching back more than two thousand years, and the next you are standing in front of the striking City of Arts and Sciences, looking at architecture that appears to belong in the future. The city blends Roman, Moorish, Gothic and modern influences while somehow remaining completely comfortable in its own identity.

As educators, we often talk to students about growth. We encourage them to learn from the past while preparing for the future. Walking through Valencia feels like seeing that lesson brought to life.

The city also enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine each year, and after months of British weather, I can confirm that sunshine really does change your perspective.

Watching people stroll through parks, sit outside talking with friends and enjoy life at a slightly slower pace has reminded me of something we often discuss with our coaching clients. Success is important, but so is wellbeing. Achievement matters, but so does balance.

Many of the students and adults we support arrive carrying enormous pressure. They are worried about exams, anxious about the future, lacking confidence or simply exhausted from trying to meet everyone's expectations. Often, they believe they must keep pushing harder.

Sometimes the answer is not to push harder.

Sometimes the answer is to stop.

To breathe.

To look around.

To gain perspective.

To remember that we are human beings, not machines.

The best learning rarely happens when we are overwhelmed. The best decisions are rarely made when we are exhausted. Whether you are preparing for GCSEs, studying for A Levels, managing a demanding job or simply navigating life, periods of rest are not a luxury. They are part of the process.

As I sit here watching the world go by, I find myself thinking about the students who have worked so hard this year. The young people who have overcome anxiety, rebuilt confidence, tackled difficult subjects and achieved things they once thought impossible. Growth is rarely dramatic. More often it happens quietly, one small step at a time, just like the countless stones that have built this remarkable city over centuries.

When I return to 'OakWell Education' on Tuesday, refreshed, slightly sunburnt and probably carrying far too many photographs, I will be reminded once again why we do what we do. Education is not simply about grades. It is about helping people grow into confident, capable and resilient individuals who can navigate whatever challenges life places in their path.

For now, however, I am taking my own advice.

The e-mails can wait.

The lesson plans can wait.

The sunshine cannot.

Until next time,

El
